Why
can’t the larger WHITE congregations meet this need
in our community?
Educational Needs
Most Bible curriculum is based on the assumption that all children of a given age will be on the same level; but not all of our children are up to grade level. We need special curriculum to fit the needs of all of our children. Adult classes in the larger congregations likewise tend to assume that everyone is on the same level, while many of our people need to learn the fundamental aspects of Christianity.
Cultural Differences
We have many differences culturally which affect the way in which we communicate. Not only the way we speak, but also the meaning of common words or phrases can differ between the Caucasian and Black cultures. To be effective ministers of the gospel, you must understand and be able to communicate effectively with those you seek to serve.
Social Discomfort
Also involved is a certain amount of social acceptance, as a Black person who is unfamiliar with the church will most likely feel uncomfortable in an all White establishment. Our goal is not to keep the races separate, but to create an environment where our people can be comfortable enough to learn the gospel and understand that they are welcome in ANY of the Lord’s churches.
Leadership Development
One of the challenges we face is that of training our young men to be leaders in the church. A small congregation provides many needed opportunities for faithful young men to serve, where opportunities in a large congregation would be more limited for learning these leadership roles.
We feel very passionate about this ministry because we see a mission field literally in our backyard. These are our neighbors, people like us, suffering without Christ. We especially desire to reach these children, making a difference in their lives for Christ.
